This isn’t just a hurdle for pet owners; it’s a national epidemic. While microchips are theoretically the perfect solution—permanent, un-removable RFID implants that work 100% of the time—the system is fundamentally broken.
The Industry is Fragmented.
For decades, the pet recovery industry has been a mess of competing interests. Multiple microchip companies, different frequencies, closed databases, and a total lack of ISO standards have created a “Data Desert.”
When a vet or shelter worker scans a pet, they often hit a wall. They might have the wrong scanner for that brand, or they might find a chip but have no way of knowing which of the dozens of registries holds the owner’s contact info. It’s an arduous, manual process that most overworked clinics simply don’t have the time to navigate.
